Anno 2070 is a real-time strategy and city-building game. It was developed by Related Designs and Blue Byte and is published by Ubisoft. Anno 2070 is the sequel to Anno 1404 and is the latest instalment in the Anno series.

An expansion, titled "Anno 2070: Deep Ocean", which adds more underwater and Tech faction features and other features, was released in October 2012. The game, the expansion and all associated DLC are also available in "Anno 2070 Complete Edition". The DLC itself (not including Deep Ocean) can be obtained in a separate pack, the "Anno 2070 DLC Complete Pack".

Gameplay

As with other Anno games, the player, at the will of their unnamed country of origin, creates and manages their fief aside AI players. The player must colonize islands, plan settlements, set up factories and farms to meet their citizens needs, enter diplomatic relationships with AI players, and engage in naval and air-based combat with others.

Besides the old gameplay, quite some features have been added, including air-based combat, power systems and underwater structures (but no cities), the Arc and various events. The Arc is a base naval vessel capable of bringing resources and items across worlds and spreading item affects all-over in the world the Arc is residing in. Daily events provide a small bonus for a service available to be executed daily. World events last roughly a month or two and consist of players worldwide playing through a mini-campaign centered around a specific theme to raise total global scores until certain levels are reached and then related bonuses are available to all invested players.

Plot

Set in the near future, ocean levels have risen and many lands have been flooded, while previously barren lands have become green and habitable, while the entire world is massively emigrating to these new archipelago-like lands.

The campaign begins as the player has been employed by Global Trust (the traditional and industrious company, referred to as Tycoons) to support in his efforts to construct a hydroelectric dam. Due to rushed development the dam breaks and, a higher-placed employee comes to check on the progress. Discovering the tragedy, you are entrusted with the recovery of the local employees and valuable goods. Due to an oil spill quickly afterwards, the player is introduced to the Eden Initiative, who are Global Trusts nemesis and opposites, embracing modern green energy and harmony with nature, as well as cleaning up oil spills, when you aren't ordered by them to do so, referred to as Ecos. Once cleaned, the SAAT (third party/support party, referred to as Techs) arrive to request your support to dive up the long ago sunk very first Arc. This Arc appears to contain encrypted data, though, and brought back to the SAAT headquarters, the encrypted data is made out to be a virus, infecting the AI SAAT leader, FATHER. When FATHER flees and threatens with nuclear assaults, you have the duty to bring the conflicting factions together to collectively combat FATHER.

Reception

IGN gave the game an 8.5, saying: "The future is bright for this long-running strategy series." Metacritic praised the game with a charitable 83 critics rating and slightly less charitably 6.8 users rating.
